Position Title: Communication Officer
Reports to: Advocacy and Communication Manager
Supervises:
Duty Station: Musanze, Rwanda
Grade: A3
Contracted by: IGCP
I. The goal of the Position:
To raise awareness about and support for mountain gorillas and the efforts to conserve them by IGCP and partner organizations and institutions.
II. Major Functions:
The Communication Officer will be responsible for profiling and championing IGCP’s communications, document IGCP’s work in partnership with various institutions and organizations, and keep coalition members and the general public updated with information and materials about mountain gorillas and the work of IGCP and partners.
III. Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communication Officer’s major responsibility is gathering, storing, packaging, and disseminating communication collateral for use by IGCP and coalition members.
Specific tasks:
- Be proactive to feed the IGCP coalition with information about IGCP’s work with partners to conserve mountain gorillas.
- Be reactive to communications/fundraising inquiries from the IGCP coalition.
- Update and manage IGCP’s webpages.
- Amplify IGPC’s visibility and brand by exploring and reviewing effective mechanisms and channels.
- Update and maintain the IGCP photo and video library.
- Contribute to IGCP’s awareness campaigns at both the grassroots, national/regional, and global levels.
- Write content as well as manage the publication processes to develop communication outputs of all kinds such as the quarterly Silverback Standard newsletter, reports, audio-visual products, articles, etc.
- Spearhead dissemination of all IGCP communication products with coalition members, partners, and the general public both online and in print.
- Write quarterly My Animal field reports about adopted and select mountain gorilla groups for sharing with coalition offices.
- Support the development and implementation of the IGCP communication strategy.
- Support and promote stakeholder engagement at both local and regional levels.
- Coordinate media outreach programs of IGCP when necessary.
- Support the Advocacy and Communication Manager to coordinate advocacy and communication activities.
- Perform any other duties as required.
IV. Profile:
Required Qualifications
- Degree in communications or journalism, or relevant conservation field.
- A proven interest in conservation or community development issues.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in communication or journalism field.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Strong writing skills in English.
- Proven time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
- Photography and videography experience is preferred; capacity to quickly learn these skills is required
- Experience in WordPress is preferred; the capacity to quickly learn website maintenance in WordPress is required.
- Experience in digital communications and social media management.
- Bilingual in English and French, preferred
- Willingness to work as part of a multi-cultural team

V. Working Relationships:
Internal
The Communication Officer will report to the Advocacy and Communication Manager and work with all IGCP staff to have a good understanding of the conservation issues that IGCP works to address. The Communications Officer will work closely with the Advocacy and Communication Manager to ensure the tone, message, and content of communications materials are in line with the strategic goals of the Programme.
External
The Communication Officer will work with the communications and fundraising teams throughout the IGCP coalition, as well as the communications teams of partner institutions. The Communication Officer will routinely interact with partner organizations and community members throughout the Virunga – Bwindi landscape and will need to have an openness to these interactions with mutual respect.
VI. Travel:
To perform the duties of this position, the Communications Officer will spend an estimated 30-50% of his/her time in the field in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In these instances, the IGCP perdiem policy will be applied.
