At Ecovironment, we believe that the key to solving plastic waste challenges lies in innovation—and in the hands of young entrepreneurs. Our recent plastic entrepreneurship workshop in Monrovia, Liberia, embodied this philosophy. Designed to unleash the full potential of young people within the plastic entrepreneurial ecosystem, the workshop equipped over 350 participants with practical skills to turn plastic waste into business opportunities.
The training focused on sustainable skills development, teaching participants how to transform discarded plastics into marketable products such as flower pots, trash bins, reusable shopping bags, and jewellery. Each item crafted from plastic waste demonstrated the creative potential of upcycling and introduced new avenues for sustainable business ventures. By giving these young entrepreneurs the tools to create products with real economic value, we aimed to inspire them to launch enterprises that address environmental challenges while contributing to their communities’ economic growth.
Fostering Entrepreneurial Mindsets for a Sustainable Future
We emphasized the importance of seeing plastic waste not as a burden but as a resource for innovation and entrepreneurship. Participants explored how they could build viable businesses to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on responsible production and consumption, decent work, and climate action. By aligning their entrepreneurial efforts with environmental sustainability, these young entrepreneurs are equipped to lead the charge toward more sustainable cities and communities.
From Local Solutions to Regional Impact
This workshop in Liberia aligns with Ecovironment’s broader mission to create sustainable economies through waste management and plastic recycling. In Sierra Leone, our efforts have resulted in recycling over 450 tons of plastic waste, producing eco-friendly construction materials, and generating green jobs. Our expansion to Monrovia reinforces our belief that sustainable solutions can scale across regions, creating ripples of impact that benefit both people and the planet.
Building Sustainable Business Models
Beyond the technical training, the workshop introduced participants to sustainable business models centered around upcycled products. Participants learned how to assess market needs, develop viable products, and build profitable and eco-friendly businesses. This holistic approach ensures they leave the workshop with more than just practical skills—they also gain the entrepreneurial mindset needed to thrive in the plastic ecosystem.
Ecovironment’s vision is to create an interconnected network of young entrepreneurs who see environmental challenges as opportunities for business growth and social impact. By building businesses that recycle plastic waste, they reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, and build climate-resilient communities.
“This workshop is just one example of how Ecovironment continues to empower young people to shape a sustainable future—one plastic product at a time”- Foday David Kamara (Founder & Strategic Lead).
