Parents are encouraged to buy books for their children just as they buy food and clothes for them ‘USAID Ibitabo Kuri Twese’

The culture of reading books in Rwanda, not all citizens know its value, only that ‘what you feed a child is what nourishes him’, how a child is provided with food and other necessities to live well, and that is how he needs books to sharpen his intellect.

Under the ‘USAID Ibitabo Kuri Twese’ program, those in Rusiga sector, Rurindo district at the cultural center known as Ku Kirenge cya Ruganzu , were exposed to books and children were given opportunities to sharpen and increase their knowledge.

On November 28, 2024, at the Ikirenga  Cultural Center known as Ku Kirenge cya Ruganzu, books were released with the aim of sensitizing residents to increase the culture of reading and encouraging parents to remember to buy books for their children because they are also fed with knowledge.

Students believe that this library, which was equipped with other books by USAID Ibitabo Kuri Twese’ is useful, because when they come and read, they gain additional knowledge that they have learned from school.

Among the challenges students face are the lack of access to books to read because parents are not used to buying them for them, and the fact that they read things they do not understand and have no one to explain them.

The ‘USAID Books for All’ program was launched with the aim of sensitizing Rwandans to the culture of reading and writing books.

They travel around the province delivering books so that everyone can read without having to go far, and they also encourage parents to “remember to buy books for your children just like you buy food and clothes for them,” said Mutesi Gasana, who is in charge of bringing books closer to readers, and was echoed by Jean Baptiste Mayira, a Rurindo district employee.

It is expected that this event will last for 3 days in this region from the 28th to the 30th of November 2024, where all those around the area including students, teachers, parents and others will be given a good opportunity to showcase their writing talents and be encouraged to read and buy books.
